Memories........

So what do you give the person who has everything?

Memories!

I've had a packet of the Matildas Own inkjet printable fabric sitting on my sewing shelf for ages and couldn't bring myself to open it for fear of ruining it! But my MIL's "sweet sixtee...th" approaching fast I decided to take the plunge!

I'd been collecting photos for a couple of months now, lots of black and white ones, some colour and been putting together my ideas for a lap quilt for her, filled with memories of her family, past and present.

The fabric I choose had warmer tones to it, browns, tans, plums etc so black and white was too harsh. With a little help from hubby I used a handy dandy photo program to turn them all into sepia prints and they suit the fabric oh so much better!

Now to the printing.......it wasn't anywhere near as scary as I thought!

Things I learnt along the way:

* The fabric paper comes out of the packet a little curly so gently rolling it back the opposite way helps it to feed through the printer better.

* The colour on you computer screen isn't always what will print (which is normal for most printers unless you have a fancy pants one) So to get a true sepia I need to make the pic on my screen really sepia toned to the point of looking too much but then it would print beautifully.

* Look at what fabrics you'll be using for your project and use them to help you decide whether to do black/white, sepia or colour. You want to photos to be able to blend into the quilt/whatever without looking too harsh.

* Always test your photo first on normal paper! Then you can adjust colours, sizes etc.

Can't wait to get sewing...will keep you updated!
